Catalase (CAT) is an enzyme widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells. It serves as a key enzyme in breaking down hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), playing a crucial role in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging system. H₂O₂ exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 240 nm. CAT catalyzes the decomposition of H₂O₂ into water and oxygen, resulting in a decrease in absorbance at 240 nm. The activity of CAT can be determined by measuring the rate of decrease in absorbance at this wavelength.
